THE INAUGURAL GREAT SCALLOP SEARCH

Florida Sea Grant is looking for volunteers with boats and snorkel gear to help survey the scallop population in the Pensacola area.  There will be two events – Aug 1 in Santa Rosa Sound and Aug 8 in Big Lagoon.  Volunteers will need to work in teams of 3-4 / boat to conduct their surveys from 8:00 – 12:00 on the day of their event.  Each team is required to attend a meeting to discuss protocols, safety, and obtain the survey equipment.  The Santa Rosa meeting will be Friday July 31 at the Holley by the Sea Recreation Center anytime between 4:00 – 6:30 PM.  The Big Lagoon meeting will be Thursday Aug 6 at the Perdido Key Community Center anytime between 5:00 – 7:00 PM.  If interested in surveying Santa Rosa Sound contact Chris Verlinde at (850) 623-3868 or chrismv@ufl.edu.  if interested in surveying Big Lagoon contact Rick O’Connor at (850) 475-5230 or roc1@ufl.edu

The Bay Scallop can be identified by the "wings" found near the point where the two shells join. There is a single clam in the photo for comparison.
