Shrubs and Trees
  • Plant bare-root roses and fruit trees immediately after they are purchased. Water well until establishment.
  • Selectively prune crape myrtle to develop shape. Do not top branches as that can lead to increased disease and insect problems.
  • Look for scale insects on hollies, Indian hawthorn, viburnums, banana shrub, and palms. Apply a horticultural oil as needed.
  • Learn more about crape myrtles.
Lawns
  • Unless you have overseeded your lawn with ryegrass, turn off the sprinkler system. If there has not been rain for a month, apply 1/2 to 3/4 inch of water to your grass.
Flowers and Vegetables
  • Continue adding color to selected spots by adding phlox, snapdragons, pansies, petunias, diascia, and dianthus.
  • Continue planting seeds of turnips, carrots, radishes, mustard greens and transplants of cabbage, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.
Miscellaneous
  • Orange fruiting structures of the stinkhorn mushroom can be removed with a trowel from garden beds if their smell is a nuisance.
  • Consider making a compost pile to help dispose of landscape debris onsite. You can compost grass clippings, small tree prunings, eggs shells, coffee grounds, shredded leaves, and fruit and vegetable scraps.
